The following table summarises and compares the work of the year and that of the preceding year in the three areas Observations of chimneys Visits to factories Tests of appliances Bombay 1931-32 Do. [...] Since the Act has been amended a considerable time is spent in explaining to the owners of smaller factories the extent of the amended Act and Rules and in giving advice for the construction of flues and chimneys according to requirements and this accounts for the decrease recorded in the number of visits and tests.4 In spite of the continued depression in trade and its consequences on the indust [...] Under the arrangement made with the License Department the owner of a factory who applies for a license under the City Municipal Act is asked by the Department to comply with the provisions of the Smoke Nuisances Act before such license is granted and the Commission is at the same time informed of the application received. The fall in the number of observations and of visits to factories recorded at Ahmedabad was due to the less number of hours devoted to smoke nuisances duties as compared with those in the preceding year owing to the heavy pressure of boiler inspection work. [...] At the request of the local Sanitary Association the Chief Inspector attended one of their meetings in the year under report when the problem of the abatement of smoke was generally discussed.
