CHAPTER II A CROWDED DAY IN MONTEVIDEO Early in the morning of August 17 we were alongside the quay of Montevideo the beautiful capital of the Uruguay Republic and were immedately caught hold of by inn [...] The British Consul and representatives of the Urgiyan Government received me on the boat and drove me to the Parque Hotel " a splendid up-tdate hotel facing the sea and situated in the healthiest part of the town. [...] The first part of the journey is rather uninteresting as we pass through barrenmountainsACROSS THE ANDES 45 with scrub and stunted trees here and there but following the course of the river Mendoza and labouring up the gradients we at last enter the foohills and are well into the heart of the Andes glistening in the brightness of their perpetual snows. [...] It was founded by Pizarro the Conqueror and amidst the woe and destruction which he brought to the land of the Incas Lima the beautiful city survives as the most glorious work of his creation the fairest gem on the shores of the Pacific.
