Quinquennial Report of the Sir J.J. School of Art Bombay for the Quinquennium 1932-37

1933

The disturbing factor Which: came upon the School during the Session 1932-33 was the publiction of the Thonias Committee's Report with its recommendations for the abolition of the School of Art with the exception of the Architectural Section which was to be removed elsewhere. [...] During the Session 1932-33 owing to the financial stringency of Government and consequent on the publication of the Thomas Committee's Report the most drastic curtailment in the grant allocated to the Visiting Staff was suffered by this Section. [...] The abolition of the S. holarships and the levy of fees are the main factors responsible for the small number of students in this Section. [...] The number of students on the rolls of the Drawing and Painting Modelling and Architectural Sections of the School of Art on the 31st March 1937 was 518 as against 469 on the 31st March 1936 and 432 on the 31st March 1932. [...] In the light of new experience and the wider scope demanded of the artist to cope with the new outlook in art matters generally consideration will in the near future have to be given to exploring other channels in addition to Mural Painting and bring into service the great deal of talent available in the School of Art.
