Colonel Upton's march across India from Calcutta to Poona in 1775-76 in order to conduct negotiations with the ... Mr Hastings and his Council and in supersession of the Bombay Government. [...] He had the post of Nurser to the Chili probably on account of his near relationship; he was nephew to Lachlln of Nuid 20th Chief of the Clan and cousin to Lachlan's son, Ewalt of the "45." Their mother was 1nna Macpherson sister of Donald Macpherson of Kinlooch (Laggan) and Alexander Macpherson of Druiminuird in Badenoch Inverness. [...] After the peace of 1762 the Regiment was reduced to one Battalion and in October was transfered from in tact the warrant of kiltj the Second directing that the 42nd Regiment should be called. [...] In 1768 when on the Malabar coast he joined the storming party at the siege of Mangalore as a volunteer and was one of the first to enter the fort when it was taken. [...] In 1776 he was dismissed the service by Lord Pigot the Governor of Madras and his Council on the ground that he had intrigued in favour of the Nawab of Arcot and against the interest of the Company.
