Indian Central Cotton Committee Technological Laboratory A Dial Reading Appratus for the Determination of Fibre-Strength February 1939

1939

The cork in the float V2 is fitted with a hook K1 which passes through an eyelet to which the lower end of the fibre is fixed the other end being fixed to the eyelet passing through the hook K2 in the device for holding the fibres as explained above. [...] When however a current flows through it the attraction between the pole pieces and the disc overcomes the mild resistance of the springs the disc is pulled towards the magnet and the wheels W1W2 are thrown into gear with the wormwheels R1R2. [...] The reading for the next fibre will then commence from the point corresponding to the breaking strength of the first fibre; and when the second fibre breaks the reading on the dials will give the total for the two fibres. [...] It is interesting in this connection that if the cross sections of the float the counterpoise and the cylinders and the diameter of the pulley W be quite uniform the dial reading would be directly proportional to the weight and the curve referred to above would be a straight line. [...] In actual practice however owing to slight variations in the cross section of the floats and the cylinders and the diameter of the pulley the linear relationship between the dial reading and the weight may not always exist and the curve actually obtained may be slightly parabolic.
