Indian Central Cotton Committee Its Objects Activities and Achievements with special referance to Punjab Sind the United Provinces and Central India

Among the problems studied may be mentioned those of determination of causes of peppiness in cotton ; the relationship between the feel and wax content of a cotton ; improved methods of stapling a cotton ; the combing of good quality Indian cotton the effect of different settings in the carding engine on the quality of yarn the use of balanced and unbalanced drafts with mixings of Indian cottons [...] The Governing Body of the Institute is representative of the Cotton Committee and the membeStates and its President is the Agent to the Governor-General in Central India. [...] Realizing the importance of the study of this pest the Indian Central Cotton Committee sanctioned a Scheme in order (a) to determine thoroughly over a series of years the incidence of Pink Boll-worm in vai ious parts of the Province and (b) to ascertain reasons for the difference in the incidence of Pink Boll-worm in the various parts of the Punjab. [...] The results obtained showed that— (a) the attack started in the beginning of August and increased with the progress of the season there being 3-4 broods of the pest till the end of October ; (b) the intensity of infestation varied from year to year ; the same locality showing wide fluctuations during different years : (c) the attack was serious in certain parts of the Province e.g. [...] The havoc to the cotton crop caused by the Boll-weevil in America and the Red Bolworm in Africa and the risk to which the growers in this country stood exposed by the introduction of these pests through free importation of cotton and cotton seed were matters of great concern to the Committee.
