Owing to the mobile character of the operatiOn the featurless nature of the ground and the general lack of enterprise displayed by the enemy in the erection of obstacles there were few en gineer tasks in this battle. [...] The town of Kettn consisted of a few white buildings high above the advancing troops while from the valley "a road edged towards it watched by the gun positions on the heights and wound slowly upwards into the throat of the pass.' The road in the gorge wa§ dominated by grim and forbidding mountains; the pinnacle of Fort Dologorodoc on the east and the vast bulk of Mount Sanchil towering 1000 f [...] The important area was detached from the control of the Commander-in-Chief India and General Quinan was appointed to the Command of the 10th Army in Iraq and Iran. [...] The ruins of Babylon and the old city of Kirkuk which were visited by some men lent some glamour to the journey but the heat and the sand were more pressing thoughts Basra in August was like the heat of an oven and the sand desolate and unbroken stretched for mile upon mile across the desert. [...] The only approach from the north-east was through the precipitous Ruwandiz Gorge on the Iranian Frontier and from the north across the 5000 ft.
