The questionnaire used in this inquiry is printed in Appendix A. This particular investigation was of a somewhat different nature from the more general Village Surveys conducted by the Board its special object being to ascertain the normal consumption in a prosperous village of the various articles of food and particularly of wheat by the various classes of the population. [...] The British Cotton Growing Association is a company engaged in the cultivation of cotton in the ' colony' served by the Lower Bari Doab Canal in the Punjab and particularly in the neighbourhood of Khanewal which is an important railway junction on the Lahore-Multan and Lahore-Karachi lines of the N. W. Railway. [...] *For the explanation of the vernacular words used in this report the reader is referred to the Glossary at the end of the book. [...] These figures are based upon observation of the daily consumption of particular families asishown in Appendix B. In the same appendix will bfound particulars of the total yearly consumption of wheat and gram by these families obtained from the registers of the Association and arrived at by a comparison of the stock at the beginning of and production and puchases during the year with sa [...] Approximately one-half of the grain produced is treated as the landlord'share or batai that is to say it becomes the property of the Association in return for the use of the land buildings and implements and for such services as water supply and marketing arranged by the Association.
