1765-181& The Sundarbans' are the southern portion of the Ganges delta extending from the getugii on the west to ithe Meghna on the east through the present 'districts of 24-Paiganas Khulna and Bakarganj and their limits on the north are the permanenly-Settled lands of those districts. [...] The forest was 'the propert the State and was not included in the Permanent Settlement; but its extentAuld not be defined during the early period while the southern boundaries of the iamindaris were undetermined and it was not tin about the year 1838 that the claims which the zamindars stsserted to the forest were decided and the et nfulion dissipated.' 2. Origin and description of the patitAbd [...] reality to those lands only which were recorded as cultivated in the measurement papers of 1783 and.the ether.conditions of the lease as regarded the assessment with revenue of increased cultivation still held good.' But in fact the mahalls were classed indiscriminately with the ordinary zamindari lands and except for an isolated reference by the Collector in 1803 " the rights of Government [...] Henckell% scheme of Sundarban reclamation in Jessore 1783-84--With the objects of securing the peace of the country against the dakaits that infested the Sundarbans and of bringing the Sundarban wastt into cultivation Mr. [...] Henckellganj (naraid after him and subsequently corrupted to Hingafganj) on the west bank of the Jalmina at its junction with the Ketlindi in the west of his jurisdiction ; Chandkhali on the river Kabadak in the middle; and Kachua at the junction of the Baleswar and Bhairob rivers in the east.
