The severity of the burns varied with the position of the persons in the file the leading three being affected most. [...] G. C. Leach the Inspector in charge of the Circle found.a slight trace at the entrance of the level and a gas cap in the safety lamp inch in height near the roof at a distance of 30 feet inbye of the entrance. [...] The gas which caused this explosion was so far removed from the working places and travelling roads of the mine as to render it harmless to the persons in the working portion of the mine and consequently the manager cannot be blamed for not having it kept cleared but the particular lesson inculcated by the accident is the danger that must always be present where a large accumultion of gas a [...] The positions of the bodies as found are shown on plan B. This plan also shows the positions of the survivors those who subsequently died being distiguished from those who recovered the approximate positions of all persons at the moment of the explosion as far as could be gleaned from the evidence and the directions in which the stoppings were blown by the force of the explosion. [...] In addition this arrangement affords a continuous indication of the progress of the fire by the volume and nature of the gases escaping from the bent pipe and through the water ; and finally when the atmosphere in the burning section contracts on cooling water alone and not air is drawn into the rear of the dam.
