The Assistant Investigator will be in charge of the soil work which includes exhaustive and detailed study of the physical and chemical nature of the soil types found in the dry farming tracts the general sun-ey and classification of the soils found in the tract and the effect of different treatments on the different types. [...] The failure may be due usually to the combined effect of the vagaries of the rainfall the topography and the shallow infertile nature of the soils prevalent in this tract. [...] The problem may therefore be summaried as how to grow crops successfully on shallow infertile soils in the precarious tract of the Bombay-Deccan ". On account of the great importance of the problem which involves a large area of the Presidency and affects the majority of agricultural population the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research were approached by the Bombay Government to finance Rese [...] The first crop grown for uniformity test was however fully utilized for making preliminary observations on the development of plants the germinating capacity of the different soils the change of soil-moistures in the different types of soils determinations of the wilting points of the soils the incidence of sugary secretion appearance of several insect and fungoid diseases etc. [...] Preliminary surveying and levelling of the areas of the stations were therefore carried out with the help of the Bunding Officer kindly lent by the Deputy Director of Agrculture S. D. and the Graduate Assistant of the Soil Physicist.
