METHODS OF STUDY It was realized from the beginning that the identification of the plant-remains it' at all possible would take a considerable time but the difficulties encountered in the process were beyon [...] This structure and the distribution of paratracheal and apotracheal parenchyma suggest the affinity of the timber to the Leguminoseae and particularly to the genera Dalbergia and Pterocarpus. [...] The number of ripplmarks per inch and the distribution of paratracheal and apotracheal parenchyma cells of the timber from Harappa agree with those of the Dalbergia. [...] A study of the distribution of the vessels fibres and parenchyma cells shows great similarity to 2 genera namely Schleichera of Sapindaceae and Zizyphus of Rhamnaceae.' Furthermore the structure of the rays and pits on the walls of fibres and vessels of the material from Harappa show complete agreement with the Zizyphus. [...] These anatomical features plus the peculiar pattern formed by the fibres indicate the affinity of the timber with the genera Celtis and Ulmus of the Ulmaceae.
