1890

The rail-borne exports from Northern India as entered in our Inland Trade Returns for 1888 89 were compared with those given in the Report on the Administration of the Northern India Salt Revenue Department for the same year the result of the comparison being that the two sets of figures corresponded somewhat closely. [...] THE figures exhibiting the average consumption of salt per head of the population in the North-Western Provinces and Oudh during 18S7-88 (618113s.) appear low for the following reasons :— (1) The figures of imports of salt into the Meerut Revenue Division as shown in the Railway Trade Report of the North-Western Provinces and Oudh for 1887-88 do not seem to be correct. [...] Looking at the matter in the light of the above remarks it would seem probable— (I) that there is a large error in the imports of the Meerut Division subsequent to 1681-85 ; (2) that there is some error in the figures showing the salt trade of the North-Western Provinces and Oudh with the Punjab. [...] To the west and south the people of the Rohilkhand and Allahabad blocks and to the east the people of Behar consumed a full quantity of salt. [...] The decrease in the imports by rail since 1885-86 is principally due to a change in the mode of the transport of the Punjab salt to the eastern divisions of the Province.
