Board of Economic Inquiry Punjab. Annual Review of Economic Conditions in the Punjab.1945-1946

1946

64PREFACE In January 1945 the Board started a new series called the `Monthly Survey of Economic Conditions in the Punjab.' The start was modest but gradually the scope of the Survey was enlarged and in the form in which it now appears it seeks to present every month a bird's eyview of the various segments of the economy of the Province : its agriculture and prices comodity and share mark [...] The handloom industry suffered from the paucity of yarn and for the same reason hosiery industry remained in the grip of depression during the first half of the year. [...] The desirable features were the extension of banking operations to new areas especially the Indian States consolidation of capital structure by the issuing of more capital and the increasing of the proportion between different forms of capital and a tremendous increase in the deposits. [...] A remarkable feature of the year was the reversal of the tendency of demand deposits to dominate among the liabilities of the bank. [...] The price of bajra was steady during the earlier months of the year but its statutory maximum price was lowered in November and the market price rose above the maximum towards the close of the year.
