1936

V. Bacteriological Work.—In view of the fact that the gradual fall in the yield of sugarcane in the canal.tract is usually accompanied by rise in the carbon nitrogen ratio of the soil it was thought that a thorough investigation into the nature of decomposition of different organic matters which form by far the greatest portion of the manures used for sugarcane and the residual effects of such [...] This is the first year of the normal working of the pot culture experiments and these studies have shown the inefficiency of 70 and the efficiency of 95" from both the standpoint of yield as well as transpiration. [...] The decrease of yield in the case of the umanured plots is the least in the light soil which is probably explained by the power of quick recuperation possessed by this type of soil. [...] The fallow plot was taken in preference to the cane plot for comparison of nitrate as the uptake of nitrate by the plants in the latter may totally mask the actual nitrate level in the soil. [...] In reviewing the position at the end of two years it may be stated in brief that in the light soil the greatest benefit is obtained by leaving the soil to wild vegetation the whole of the gain in nitrogen being secured during the first year.
