1952

This then would appear to be one of the earliest references to the production of cloth made from the fibre of a plant which now provides the raw material for one of the most important textile industries in the world. [...] It was in the first half of the nineteenth century that the industry began to flourish and by the end of the decade 1850-60 the sale of hand woven goods provided one of the principal sources of income for the bulk of the population of Bengal. [...] With the introduction of power driven machinery for jute however the position of the hand-loom industry was seriously threatened and before long in the face of the ever increasing competition from the mills in Dundee and later in Calcutta it gradually declined. [...] This was the first step in the establishment of an industry which in course of about a century has become one of the most important factors in the economic life of the country. [...] The World War of 1914-18 and the years of economic and industrial diffculties following it caused a setback in the development of the industry; but by 1926 trade conditions settled down and with the improvement of business further expansion took place the loom strength being 8 698 in 1928 and 9 600 in 1939.
