Methods and Apparatus.—Sarkar1 has designed an apparatus for the measurement of tensile strength of jute fibre and by its means has studied the factors on which the strength of the fibre actually depends the conditions under which deterioration takes place as well as the effects of various chemical treatments on the tensile strength of the fibre before and after delignification. [...] In this way the whole of the calcium is precipitated as oxalate the decrease in the concentration of the oxalate being equivalent to the exchangeable calcium in the soil. [...] In the adoption of the method in practice Harihara Iyer and Rajagopalan37 have laid stress on the importance 'of the order of addition of the reagents and the rate of heating of the digesting mixture and have outlined a modified procedure for determination of nitrogen by fumeless digestion. [...] The latter is adsorbed in considerable quantities by the mineral fractions of the soil the extent of adsorption depending chiefly upon the concentration in solution the nature of the mineral constitents forming the clay fraction of the soil and its moisture content. [...] An examination of some of the factors influencing the course of anaerobic decomposition indicates that a temperature of 30°-35° is optimum for anaerobic digetion and that the pH of the medium exerts a controlling inflence on the course of the fermentation.
