1884

Madri pleaded that she was the youngest and most beloved and therefore the most likely to comfort the dead Maharaja in the world of shades.2 Accordingly Madrf perished on the funeral pile and Kuntf returned with the five sons of Pandu to the palace of Hastinapur. [...] When the day began to dawn the people gathered round the barriers and between the galleries to witness the exercises of the Kauravas and PAndavas. [...] All the ladies of the court also took their seats in the galleries.; and the chief amongst them were Gandhiri' the mother of the Kauravas and Kunti the mother of thePandasihis. [...] He tore up a tree by the roots to serve as a club ; and then fought the cannibal and slew him atiki dragged his body to the gate of the city.' The stories of Hidimbi and Vaka are apparently allegorical fictions coined by the Brahrnanical compilers of the Aloha Bhara.ta as an expresion of their hatred against the Buddhists. [...] The man who strung the bow 'and shot an arrow through the chakra which should strike the eye of the fish was to be the winner of the daughter of the Raja.
