This report the publication of which bas been authorised by the Governing Body of the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research presents the results of an enqUiry into the production and consumption of milk in seven typical cattle breeding tracts of India which was undertaken by the Council at the suggestion of His Excellency the Viceroy in order to obtain a sound economic background for future [...] Kartha who were responsible for the original training of the staff engaged for the work ; to the Supervisors responsible for conducting the Enquiry and to the field staff and the staff of the Animal Husbandry Bureau who have worked out the detail. [...] This enquiry was undertaken at the instance of His Excellency the Marquess of Linlithgow who suggested that it is now time to make a beginning in the direction of ascertaining by direct enquiry the actual position as to the numbers of cattle main tained and the amounts of milk produced and consumed in villages. [...] Training of Supervisors :—To ensure uniformity in the interpretation of the various items of the questionnaire and in the method of recording the data the Supervisors were given practical training at Delhi before the enquiry was actually started. [...] The reports of Supervisors reproduced in Appendix I describe the general economic condition of the people and the conditions of cattle breeing and the production and consumption of milk in the areas investigated.
