Finance.—During the first five ye the scheme the Imperial Council of Agricultural Research met practically tire cost of the scheme the Bombay Government contributing only the budge of the Manjri Experimental Farm. [...] The other properties of the underlying rock which have an important bearing on the pedogenic processes in the soil are the comparative hardness of the rock and the general habit and direction of its cleavage all of which partly determine the ease with which water is allowed to leach through the soil mass. [...] Method of classification and soil types.—The method of soil classification employed in the present study is called the Genetic system of soil classification which takes into coAsideration the entire transverse section of the soil or the " soil profile ""as the unit of study.' According to the Russian workei; the soil is a distinct entity the state of which at any given time is the result of a lon [...] The presence of the lime band which hinders the free movement of the products of weathering is partially responsible for the high base saturation of this soil particularly with magnesium and sodium in the lower layers and also for the presence of Na2 Co3 in lower layers. [...] The causes of this break-down of the silicate complex and the mobilisation of the products may be attributed to the following factors :—(i) The soils are subjected to very high temperature in summer which is not the case in the tschernosems of Russia ; (ii) Rainfall though usually low comes occasionally with heavy down-pours which help to mobilise both the clay and the products of chemical weathe
