Four of the artists rpresented in my small gallery namely Lal Sawalah Madhu and Muskin are mentioned by Abul Fazl in the ifin-i-ilkbari as ' among the forerunners on the high road of art '. I am much indebted to the Librarian of the British Mugeum Library and to the Curators of the Indian Section of the Viaoria and Albert Museum for the facilities afforded me in obtaining copies of the [...] In eftimating the hiftorical value of the Hifioire it is necessary to bear in mind the purpose of the compiler and the nature of the materials he had at his disposal as well as the fart that accuracy of reprodu6tion is not in itself a guarantee of the accuracy of the information reproduced. [...] The account here reproduced of the Missions to the court of Akbar is based on the letters of the Fathers by whom the Missions were condu6ted and the reports sent to the General of the Society at Rome by the Provincials at Goa. [...] For the gtudent of Indian higtory however the ouhanding intereft of du Jarric's compilation lies not so much in the references it contains to contemporary events as in the intimate light it sheds on the charaaer and mind of Akbar in the portraits it presents of the royal Princes and other notable figures of the time and in the insight it affords into the general conditions of life under Mo [...] But as already pointed out the attitude of the Fathers towards the general affairs of the empire was one of indifference ; and xliiiINTRODUCTION on this account and for the reasons previously given the Hinoire in so far as it relates to the a6tion of the political drama of the period needs to be read and used critically and with caution.
