The Survey and Settlement Manual Relating to the System of Measurement and Classification under the Revenue Survey of the Bombay Presidency 1901

7738 dated 30th November 1898 in order to provide as far as possible a complete record a the methods of working and the rules of procedure of the Bombay Survey and Settlement Department in view of the final closing of the Department and the transfer of its records to the Land Re= cord Staff of the Revenue Department. [...] The general principles on which the operations of Survey and settlement have been married oe have-been described in the following introduction which icludes an historictil summary showing the origin of the system of measurement of the land classification of the soil and settlement of the revenue and their development down to the present time when the two former operations are no longer neces [...] Regarding the advantage for calclation of these divisions of the acre Lieutenant Nash previous to the commencment of the Survey favoured me with the following remarks :— The division of the acre into gunthas and annas seem to me toe one in every way accordant with the spirit of Indian calculation and at the same time well adapted for the multiplication of the contents of the field by the r [...] The question as-to the plan on which the revision survey should be conducted formed the subject of considerable discussion and under instructions from Government the then Survey Commissioner (Lieutenant-Colonel Francis) held a conference with the officers of the Great Topogrphical Survey with the special object of incorporating the work of the Bombay Revenue Survey with that of the Topographi [...] The next and the last operation of the classing party is to examine carefully the entries in the classing books and other papers prepared in the course of the classification during the field season.
