[...] The conflict toe= tween the East and the West the hatred of the European towards the Asiatic the spirit of crusade against the Oriental religion which were the medieval reproductions of the classical anti-Persian enthusiasm have in recent times given place to the desire for security and protection of the national autonomies of European powers against the encroachments of modern Russia and the [...] The Frankish Empire of Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire of Otto the Great were the handiworks of such theological politcians " and " political theologians." And gradually a time came when the Popes were the dictators of European polities and controlled not only the religious but the political and financial affairs of the Empire and the kingdoms.
