Reports Relating to the Conference on Art at Calcutta 1949. Ministry of Education Government of India

1949

We whole-heartedly welcome the decision of the Government of India just at the time when they have begun to recognise the need of Art Education among general public and also when they have 'recognised the importance of giving art its proper place in the education of the public. [...] The name of the organisation is 411 India Association of Fine Arts." * * * My view is that the Government should be ill advised to talc* the initiative away from the artists ' hands by sponsoing any new organisation for the purpose but the Government should step in to help compose differences in the interest of art and utilise the established organisation for co-ordinating art-activities in [...] Just as in the tIpic-neems - ilamayana and 'fahabharata of India all the culture all the aspirations and all the traditions of the entire nation found eXtression the clasqicaart of Ajanta iagh Sigiria al_ 'n embodied the same kind of soul-expression of our national life and cannot therefore easily be forsaken and subplanted deliberately by foreign influence. [...] We would 'also like to add the following items in the agenda: 1. Manufacture of and facilities for Art materials in India 2. Scope and employment of artists; 3. Addition of the port-folio of Art tc the Ministry of Education in the Prcvinces; 4. Any other resolution brought up at the Conference. [...] Art is the source of unity and integrity of the country and reflects the genius of the nation and vitality of culture.
