On the research side a second Botanist and staff have added for the improvement of the minor crops of the Province vhile the staff of the Agricultural Chemist and the First Economic B tanist 'five. [...] The reson for this is that the value of a cane crop depends more on the percetage of sugar in the juice than on the gross yield of cane. [...] Thus while the inapro -d types of rices produced by the Botanist are the it-suit of research the distribtion of these has been the work of the admini. [...] Before the establishment of this section a sub-committee was appointed to investigate the causes of deterioration in the fibre and amongst other work they began a collection of the different races of jute. [...] Further studies in the field with the application of lime showed that lime greatly accelerates decomposition and that the maximum accumulation of nitrate occurs in about 4 weeks' time and that the soil gradually loses all the nitrate with the progress of the rains.
