[...] The soul does not come from any place in the heavens and seek connection with the body in the womb of the mother but it is a light that lies concealed in the seed and grows with the growth of the body. [...] I even admitthat tenderness of heart may reach such a degree as to induce a marl to give up the use of musk or honey as the procuring of the one involves the destruction and dispersio2 of the poor bees and that of the other the killing of the deer and its separation from its young ones. [...] The only line of distinction that can be drawn between the movements of a mad man or a child on the one hand and the actions of a man of reason on the other is that the former are only natural impulses while` the latter are the result of an exercise of the reasoning faculty.
