Report on the Working of the Co-Operative Societies in Bengal 1921-22

1922

5. The district of Faridpur continued to remain under the special charge of the Deputy Registrar till the close of the year when it was tranferral to the territorial charge of the Assistant Registrar Dacca Division. [...] The increase in the working capital is thus greatly in excess of the increase in the number of societies-or the increase in the number of members and is a clear indication that every effort is being made adequately to finance the societies. [...] The results of the experiments in previous years justified the pursuit of an active policy in this matter and the policy of caution pursued with regard to the expansion of the movement on the credit side enabled the Department to devote considerable attention to preparatory work in connection with special forms of co-operation. [...] In Pabna Sadar the Central Bank is fully alive to the defects in the working of the village societies and to the necessity for the reconstitution of unwieldy and indifferent societies and for the removal of unscrupulous office-bearers after realisation of their dues to the societies. [...] But the present policy of the Union is directed not so much towards the increase in the number of societies or in the quantity of milk as to ensure a regular supply of milk all the year round particularly during the rains when the supply falls off.
