1949

REPORT PART II ELLORAThe Artistic Significance of the Sculpture and Architecture of the Ellora Cave-Temples THESE cave-temples belong to three great religious faiths of India the Buddhist the Brahmanical and the Jain and as such the cave - temples are very important for the study of the aspirations and ideals of the votaries of these sects. [...] The dim light of the nave and aisles of the Visvakarma suggests the tranquility of a divine abode the glory of which shines forth only in the afternoon when the last rays of the sun light up the face of the colossal figure of the Buddha carved on the daghoba at the end of the hall. [...] This effect is felt all the more by the small dimensions of the court and the tiny size of the pillars of some of the chapels which overlook the latter. [...] 9PRESERVATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE CAVE-TEMPLES OF ELLORA (iii) The rock-ceiling and some of the pillars of the chapel on the left side of the court have decayed. [...] VI Preservation of the Paintings and Repair of the Sculpture (i) Paintings : There are paintings in the ceilings of the porch and the main hall of the Kailasa as well as in the ceilings of the main hall and the side chapel of the Indra Sabha.
