As a result of the discussions at which the continuously increasing imbalance in India's trade with Germany also came up for review the Leader of the German Delegation in a letter dated the 16th April to Shri K. B. Lall Joint Secretary Ministry of Commerce and Industry extended an invitation to send a group of Indian exporters and industrialists to the Federal Republic of Germany in the interes [...] The main obstacle to an increase of the Indian export seems to lie in the absence of contacts between Indian and German businessmen as well as in the lack of knowledge of the demands of the German market. [...] The visit of Indian exporters would result in closer personal contacts and business relations and possibly also lead to the construction of a considerable export market organisation." 2. The hope was expressed that the Indian Government would be able to accept the invitation as an earnest of the desire of the Federal Republic to strengthen commercial contacts between the two coutries. [...] The reason for the fall in exports of groundnut oil and other vegetable oils and the coffee is the placing of restrictions on exports from India and in fact the statistics for the year 1957 would show a further marked decline. [...] As far as the home trade is concerned the Delegation studied the taste of the people through their discussions and visits to the Deparmental Stores and to the co-operative buying organisation of Kaufring"."21 9. About 90 per cent of the textiles consumed in Germany are of local manufacture.
