1924

In the meantime a close study of the application of water to the crops at Tarnab and throughout the Peshawar District is making it plain that more water is lost by the inefficient state of the water-eourFes than by the excessive application of water to the c:eps : more good land is being put out of cultivation by bad water-courses ill-placed mills etc. [...] The best results would probably be got( 14 ) from the Swabi variety where circumstances favour early sowinre say from the 15th to the 31st July and the Peshawar who e would be the better variety where the sowing is done from the 1st to the 15th August. [...] The termites follow the trial of the drill in wheat ; in maize the borers make big gaps in the lines : the respective pests find a rick vein of food and stick to it : broadcasting saves the wheat from the earth bound termites ; but exactly why the free handed method of sowing should save the maize from an active winged pest like the borer is not quite so plain. [...] The Tarnab fields were sown under favourable conditions the land was nown to be in good heart the germination was excellent the rop progressed satisfactorily.; the frequent showers at least favoured( 15 ) the growth of the crop. [...] (4) The following is the average quality of the roots from April to June calculated on the results of the analyses of :— 1912 April and June.
