Forest Bulletin No. 89 (Silviculture Series) 1934. The Effect of Defoliation on the Increment of Teak Saplings no.89

1934

It would appear very probable that the volume increment of a tree during a season would be proportional to the average leaf surface its working time and the weather conditions of the year. [...] The measurments were analysed for all 25 sets of four stems and separately also for the 12 sets of four including the survivors in series D and the following conclusions were drawn :— 1. Three defoliations in the season result in the loss of 60 to 70 per cent of the normal increment in diameter basal area height and volume. [...] Soon after the third defoliation an incipient epidemic of the skeletoniser Hapalia machaeralis was observed and steps were taken immediately to check it by spraying the trees of sets A B & D. The"DEFOLIATION ON THE INCREMENT OF TEAR SAPLINGS. [...] 3 measures were reasonably successful though the margins of some of the leaves were blackened by local concentration of the poisons used through the action of a heavy shower of rain which fell soon after the spraying. [...] At the end of the season however defoliation may result in the partial development of new leaves which in the climate of Debra Dun are usually caught by frost before they are properly hardened when not only are they shrivelled up but the vitality of the whole tree is seriously undermined.
